This industry is possibly the most extravagant thing ever created by mankind. However, it can also be frustrating at times and quite a destructive field to deep your feet it. Think rejection. You will find yourself in a lot of situations where you might not be what they’re looking for. So yes, it is not for the faint-hearted. That being said, do not deprive yourself with love and self-respect. You are unique. You are beautiful. So if you get rejected, don’t take it personally. Most of the times, designers already have a specific type in mind and it’s not your fault if you don’t fit that type.
  1. Build your portfolio.
Before you attend every single go-sees (we’ll explain this term below) you find in town, you should have an sufficient number of photographs to represent your works. And that’s why having a portfolio is important. A good portfolio should feature you in various poses, themes and angles. For someone who’s just starting out – a headshot, full-body shot, half-frame shot and several creative shots are good enough. These photographs will give agencies and designers a chance to gauge whether or not you fit for the job they’re offering.
  1. Build and enhance your modeling resume.
A good modeling resume should showcase your qualifications, abilities and experiences as a model – just like the resume you send out when applying for conventional jobs. You resume should highlight your vital statistics and distinct features (i.e. tattoos (if you have any). It should also include your educational attainment and special trainings or workshops you’ve attended. At the end of the day, your resume should provide comprehensive info and answer the question “Why should we pick you to model for us?”.
  1. Attend go-sees.practice
A go-see is modeling version of acting auditions. During go-sees, you’re expected to submit your model resume and show your portfolio. For every go-see you attend, you have a chance to land a modeling gig with fashion designers. So, make sure you’re well prepared. Imagine yourself as a blank canvas – something the designer will paint to their perfection. Wear as little make-up as possible on the go-see day. Bring along some extras clothes (tank top, shorts), heels, flats – you might need them during the event. Show them who you really are (the vibrant you, I mean) but never ever overdo it to the point they’d be annoyed.
  1. Practice makes perfect.
Designers and product owners are looking for models with unique beauty and self-control. These should show whenever you walk or in the photographs you produce. So learn various poses and facial expressions. There are so many outlets where you can find inspirations from – magazines, catalogues, internet, you name it. Practice the poses in front of the mirror.
Something to remember: make sure to practice walking in high heels at least two weeks before intended go-see. There are a lot of tutorial videos on the internet you can learn some walking tips and tricks from. Observe proper posture of every walking style.
  1. Eat and live healthy.healthy
Becoming physically fit is an investment every aspiring and professional model should engage upon. No, we don’t mean trying out crazy diets or slimming pills. As a model, you’re expected to show beauty and fitness – smooth facial/body, bouncy and voluminous hair, bright smile. All these are needed in order to gain and show confidence. All these can only be achieved by those who are properly exercising, eating well-balanced diet, maintaining good hygiene and keeping positive outlook in life.

Becoming a model is no easy task. It is more than just having a pretty face or a great body. It is about showing who you are. So, have fun and show your inner beauty. When you do, people will notice!
